Flameworking Intermediate Class – sixth class

Description

Class 11 of 12: Functional Filigree – The Lacework Bird Ring Holder
Elevate your classical glass weaving skills into the realm of luxury, functional art as you take the second to last class of our beginner series. In this eleventh installment, you will adapt the elegant loop-stitching technique to sculpt an exquisite, functional ring holder.
You will master the intricate challenge of weaving a delicate network of glass lace around a central mandrel rod, gracefully drawing the molten filigree upward into a sleek, tapered spire. Grounded by a solid glass base and crowned with an endearing, hand-sculpted bird, this project beautifully merges delicate Italian-style lacework with everyday utility.
What You Will Master
  • Mandrel Filigree Weaving: Learn the specialized coordination required to lay down continuous, woven loops of molten glass around a central rod axis.
  • Vertical pulling: Master the precise thermal balance needed to stretch and taper cooling glass lacework upward into a tall, smooth spire without collapsing the pattern.
  • Base Stability: Learn to gather a ball of glass at the foundation to provide structural equilibrium and weight to your functional art piece.
  • Asymmetric Final Assembly: Refine your precision by sculpting a miniature bird and seamlessly anchoring it to the base or spire under targeted flame heat.
Your Handcrafted Portfolio
  • One Handmade Lacework Ring Holder: A breathtaking, lace-wrapped glass spire featuring a solid base and a sculpted bird, perfectly designed to hold and display rings.
